NEW: Google Miraculously Dodges Epic’s Play Store Jab… For Now

It looks like Google just pulled off a slick escape move, dodging a November 1 deadline that would’ve forced the company to overhaul its Android Play Store. The man behind the save? U.S. District Judge James Donato, who hit pause on his own earlier ruling after Google begged for some breathing room.

In short, earlier this month, Epic Games—the creators of Fortnite and apparently, legal headaches—claimed that Google’s Play Store was a monopoly, and Donato seemed to agree. The judge had ordered some pretty hefty changes, including allowing rival app stores to set up shop on Google Play, banning Google from paying developers for exclusivity, and—prepare yourselves—no more demanding apps use Google’s payment system (and that sweet 30% cut Google takes on each transaction).

But on Friday, Google got a temporary lifeline. Donato decided to pause his own ruling so the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals could weigh in before the hammer actually drops. For now, Google doesn’t have to make any of the big changes Epic demanded—at least not until the appeals court says so.

And Google’s breathing a huge sigh of relief. “We’re pleased with the District Court’s decision to temporarily pause the implementation of dangerous remedies demanded by Epic,” Google said in a statement, probably while high-fiving across the boardroom. In case you missed the subtext: Google’s been calling these changes “dangerous” because they claim it would turn the Android ecosystem into the Wild West. You know, where privacy and security go to die.

Meanwhile, Epic Games—the company that’s basically become the Karen of tech world lawsuits—wasn’t feeling chatty. They declined to comment on the delay, but let’s be real: they’re probably not thrilled. After all, they managed to convince a jury last year that Google had been monopolizing how Android users download apps and fork over cash for in-app purchases. Donato’s order earlier this month had embraced Epic’s vision of a more open, less Google-dominated Android landscape.

So yes, Epic’s win could still mean you’ll be seeing third-party app stores rubbing shoulders with Google Play and developers breaking free from Google’s payment system by 2025. But for now, it’s all stuck in legal limbo.

Now with that said, Google is still worried. They’ve argued that opening the Play Store to rival app stores and letting developers use other payment systems would put their whole business at risk—not to mention introduce “serious safety, security, and privacy risks.” Imagine a world where downloading apps feels like rolling the dice every time. That’s the picture Google’s painting for the courts.

Plus, there’s the fact that Google’s already drowning in lawsuits. In addition to this Epic Games drama, the tech giant is facing antitrust cases on multiple fronts—most notably, the Department of Justice is out for blood, even calling for Google to break up its core businesses. Bold move Cotton, let’s see if it pays off for ‘em. .

But, but, but… when it comes to Epic though, this fight is far from over. Tim Sweeney, Epic’s CEO, has been vocal about how this lawsuit is a game-changer. He recently posted on X (formerly known as Twitter) that Fortnite and other app stores are coming to Google Play in 2025, without Google’s “scare screens” or that infamous 30% app tax.

But Google’s not backing down either. They’re taking this delay as an opportunity to keep pushing their appeal and, if necessary, they’ll take their case to the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. So, while Google may have dodged this legal bullet for now, the battle’s still raging—and it’s only going to get messier.

In the meantime, don’t be surprised if Google keeps playing defense, trying to slow down the clock on this ruling while it navigates the other antitrust cases breathing down its neck. Because if there’s one thing Google’s learned, it’s that Epic Games loves to play the long game. Sooo, go ahead and grab yo popcorn everyone… because it's only going to get more interesting from here.

As always stay safe and stay frosty, friends! Until next time…
