Ford Motor Company (NYSE: F) has issued a recall affecting more than 270,000 electric and hybrid vehicles in the United States due to a software issue that could prevent the vehicles from properly locking into park, potentially allowing them to roll away.
According to a filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the recall covers approximately 272,645 vehicles, including certain 2022–2026 F-150 Lightning BEV, 2024–2026 Mustang Mach-E, and 2025–2026 Maverick models.Ford said the issue stems from the vehicles’ integrated park module, which may fail to engage the park position when the driver shifts into park. If the system does not lock correctly, the vehicle could move unexpectedly, increasing the risk of a crash.
The automaker said it will address the issue through a software update, which will be provided free of charge. The fix is expected to be delivered over the air, meaning affected owners will not need to bring their vehicles into a dealership for repairs. Ford said owner notification letters are expected to be mailed on February 2, 2026, around the time the company anticipates the software remedy will be fully available. The company did not report any injuries related to the issue in the recall documentation but emphasized that the update is intended to prevent potential roll-away incidents.
The recall adds to a growing list of actions taken by Ford as it works to address software-related issues across its vehicle lineup. While the problem is not mechanical in nature, Ford said the over-the-air update allows the issue to be corrected efficiently without disrupting customers’ use of their vehicles.
Ford said it continues to implement changes across its quality control and vehicle software systems to improve reliability and customer confidence.
