Just when you thought social media couldn’t get any more unhinged, Sam Altman looks at the digital dumpster fire formerly known as Twitter, glances over at Zuck’s Threads-shaped participation trophy, and says: “Hold my beer.”

Yep, according to people in the know (read: the kinds of insiders who definitely drink Soylent unironically), OpenAI is cooking up a social network. And not just any social network, an X-like app with a ChatGPT twist, where users could share AI-generated images and content in a feed (Sooo Instagram?). Welcome to the AI-powered billionaire pissing match of 2025.
For starters, why in the Sam Hell (pun intended) would OpenAI build a social network? Because data is the new oil, and right now, Sam’s running a billion-dollar AI refinery without a pipeline. See, while Meta and Big Zuck are getting knee-capped as their dirty laundry gets air’d out, when it comes to feeding the insatiable demand of data for all things AI, they still have Facebook, IG, Threads (lol), and WhatsApp—all data-rich playgrounds for training Llama.

Over at the land of the degenerate and home of the crypto mouth breathers (read: X), Elon has Grok out here doing stand-up comedy on top of it, turning rage tweets into training gold. And OpenAI? Well, yeah they have ChatGPT… aaaaand a flurry of pissed off publishers who want their cut. Meaning, OpenAI launching a social app gives them something they desperately need—real-time, high-velocity, user-generated content that they own to feed the machine.
On the other hand, sure, this is all about data… but it’s also about beef. David vs. Goliath, Ali vs. Foremen, Trump vs. Fake News, and now Sam Altman vs. Elon Musk. It’s the most awkward breakup turned public slap fight, and it’s got everyone’s attention. So naturally, Sam trying to beat Elon at his own game, definitely wreaks a side of pettiness. And he’s already making moves. According to reports, there’s already an internal version floating around at OpenAI HQ. Think an image-focused feed powered by ChatGPT’s viral image gen tools (read: the same stuff that Ghibli-fied your entire timeline last week). Altman’s been quietly showing it off, asking for feedback, and, presumably, trying not to sound like he’s pitching Friendster 2.0.

Now of course, there’s no word yet on if this thing rolls out as a standalone app or gets folded into ChatGPT (which, by the way, was the most downloaded app globally last month—bigly). But the fact that it’s gone from “shower thought” to “working prototype” means it’s at least out of the “what if?” phase and into the “Okayyyy less go” phase.
Also, for you sitting here thinking Sam doesn’t have a fighting chance in the world of social media, don’t forget: Altman was CEO of Reddit… for 8 days… back in 2014. So he definitely knows enough to get himself yeeted out of office. But regardless, the fact that this idea exists—especially during a moment when Meta’s scrambling to inject AI into everything and Elon is burning cash building Grok, means OpenAI’s not content to be “just a chatbot company.”

It wasn’t the whole dayum stack. And if that means building the next TikTok for prompt nerds? So be it. For now, the race is on. It’s petty, it’s powerful, and it might just be the most chaotic thing to hit the headlines since Trump’s last tariff bombshell. Of course, do what you will with this information, but in the meantime, keep your eyes on Meta, and Elon’s sanity. Until next time, friends…
P.S. Oh, I’m sorry, I didn’t know you liked getting rekt. Let’s face it, retail investors get the short end of the stick all day everyday. It’s the smart money’s world, and we are just living in it–only useful when it comes to liquidity purposes in the market. Meaning, if you’re as pissed off as I was when I found out Milli Vanilli was lip syncing the whole time, then it’s time to go from investing blind, to investing smart.
