When do you double down vs. When do you avoid investing in losers. Asks Shmuel Goldberg @ShmuelDGoldberg. Who, amongst other things has a 2000 FIDE rating and interned with me a couple of summers ago. Shmuel - here are a few frameworks that I would use. 1. Beware value traps. I know - that begs the question - what is a value trap. For my part - I keep learning about new versions of value traps. The simple version is whether the thing that is making the stock cheap is going to persist over time or not. Some people call that a catalyst. If the thing that is making the stock cheap is likeiy to persist over time - then the company is more likely to be a value trap. 2. No matter how much I like the stock - I never invest more than 5% of my portfolio. Once it is at 5% I stop buying. 3. Then I don't look at the position for at least 2 years. Case in point is $BABA. It's a good behavioral rule. I hope this helps and hope to see you soon.
