Amazon Two-Times Anthropic After $50B OpenAI Investment Talks…

Leaked footage of Andy Jasseys telling his board about OpenAI talks…

So remember when Amazon spent the last three years playing sugar daddy to Anthropic? Yeah… turns out Amazon is also in talks to drop up to $50 billion into OpenAI.

Live look at Anthropic right now:

According to reports, Andy Jassy and Sam Altman have been having “direct conversations” on this deal where, allegedly, the term sheet could get signed in the coming weeks. Allegedly this is fine. For more context: Amazon built Anthropic an $11 billion data center campus in Indiana. Named it Project Rainier like a proud dad naming a boat. Told the world Claude was the future. Then immediately wandered off to see what Sam Altman was up to in the UAE.

Which is why this whole thing is sus on so many levels. Amazon is talking about a $50B check for OpenAI… a company currently valued around $500B… whose entire existence overlaps with the company Amazon has been bankrolling since 2023. Meanwhile Anthropic is just sitting there like, “So… are we still hoe #1 or…?” Add in the fact that Amazon is quite literally laying off 16,000 corporate employees while doing this and the “WTF” alarms start blaring.

However, from Amazon’s perspective, this all makes sense. AWS is in a full-blown arms race. Microsoft locked up OpenAI early. Google has Gemini. Nvidia owns the picks and shovels. If you’re Amazon, you don’t want an AI horse… you want every horse. Preferably stabled on your cloud. Meaning, it doesn’t matter who wins… or who fights to the death, AWS still charges for the compute. Zero emotions. All receipts.

Still… imagine being Anthropic right now. You spin out of OpenAI. Build a rival model. Get Amazon’s backing. Become the “safe” AI. The “aligned” one. The good kid. And then your biggest investor starts dipping their proverbial pen into your rivals ink. Brutal.

Of course, at the end of the day, Amazon isn’t necessarily betraying Anthropic. They’re just being Amazon… allergic to picking one thing, terrified of missing out, and perfectly comfortable lighting money on fire if it buys optionality. Still though… if Claude starts acting a little distant in the coming weeks? Yeah. That checks out. Until next time, friends…
