New area code proposal for NYC advances to public hearings

New York City may get a new area code due to the expected exhaustion of existing codes by 2026. A petition for a new three-digit code will be discussed at public hearings. Existing phone numbers will not be affected. The decision will be made by the state after the proposal is authorized.
